FAQ

Precautions
before measurement

Q1. Are there any people who are prohibited measurement?

The following users are prohibited measurement.

1) Users with implanted pacemakers or electrical medical devices

2) Users with physical disabilities preventing electrode contact or who has prosthetic limbs

3) Pregnant women (Required specialist assessment)

4) Patients recovering from surgery

5) Menstruating women

Q2. Does the weight of clothing affect body composition?

It is recommended to measure with lightweight clothing because clothing weight affects the calculation of body fat mass.
Additionally, you can exclude the weight of clothing by using the ‘Clothes(kg)’ setting on i Series.

Q3. Is it possible to wear jewelry during measurement?

It is recommended to remove jewelry and wear lightweight clothing for measurement since heavy clothes or jewelry can impact weight measurements and cause errors in body impedance.

Q4. Is it possible to measure immediately after exercising or bathing?

It is recommended to measure after at least on hour of rest due to errors caused by changes in body water distribution during exercising or bathing.

Q5. Is it possible to measure after having a meal?

Ingested food can cause errors in weight and body impedance measurement, so it is recommended to measure on an empty stomach.
Additionally, it is recommended to measure after using the restroom since urine or feces can also occur errors.

Q6. Is it possible to talk or move during measurement?

Conversation and movement can cause errors in body impedance measurement, so it is recommended to refrain from talking or moving during measurement.

Q7. What is the reason for straightening arms and legs during measurement?

i Series measures body impedance for arms, legs, and trunk separately.
Bending the arms and legs can cause significant errors in impedance measurement, so it is necessary to straighten the arms and legs during measurement for accurate results.
Using the i Series’s electrode rotation feature allows for straightening of the wrists and forearms.

Q8. What is the reason for the armpits and thighs not touching during measurement?

i Series measures impedance for the arms, legs, and trunk separately. If the armpits or thighs touch, the volumes measured for impedance of the arms, legs and trunk differ, causing errors in impedance for these body segments.

Q9. What is the reason for accurately positioning the thumbs and heels on the electrode pads?

i Series measures impedance through electrodes in contact with the hands and feet. Errors in impedance measurement may occur if there are issues with electrode contact such as a too small contact area or movement of hands and feet during measurement.

Q10. Is it possible to measure immediately after sitting or lying down?

It is recommended to stand up for about 3 minutes before measurement due to rapid changes in body water(blood flow) distribution with posture changes.

Q11. Does body temperature and indoor temperature affect body composition measurements?

Errors in impedance measurement occur if the indoor temperature where i Series is installed and the body or surface temperatures are too low or high. Therefore, measurements should be taken in a stable environment at room temperature.

Q12. Will exerting force during measurement result in a higher muscle mass measurement?

Impedance is measured differently based on the body composition. Therefore, applying force during measurement will not result in a higher measurement of muscle mass.
Excessive force during measurement may lead to poor posture with bent arms or wrists and potential joint damage, so it is recommended to relax and maintain proper posture during measurement.

Q13. Is it unsafe for the body to have current flowing during measurement?

i Series uses safe microcurrents that are harmless to the body and complies with international standards (requirements for safety performance of medical devices).

Measurement
and Results

Q1. What is the reason for body composition values changing with each measurement?

Changes in body composition values can occur due to actual changes in height, weight, similar to how they fluctuate between morning and evening.
Additionally, various factors such as food in the digestive system, physical activity, bathing, sauna, etc., can also cause changes.
To minimize these factors, adherence to precautions during measurement is recommended.
For detailed factors, please refer to the FAQ related to body composition measurement.

Q2. What is the reason for errors occurring during measurement or abnormal body composition values?

1) Please review [FAQ 1. Precautions before measurement] and measure again.

2) If hands and feet are dry or have calluses or corns, wipe them with a wet tissue before measuring.

3) Confirm if there is electrical noise in the environment.

- AC power grounding is required (including printer, PC).

- Connect the equipment's power to the wall power.

- Avoid using excessively long extension power cables.

- Do not use the same power source as other equipment with high power consumption.

- Separate or place electric field and electromagnetic wave-emitting equipment around i Series as far apart as possible.

- Do not install i Series directly under lighting.

Q3. Does dryness, calluses, or corns on hands and feet affect body composition measurement?

Since the microcurrent used to measure impedance flows through the hands and feet, dryness, calluses, or corns can affect the measurement. This can lead to significant measurement differences in trunk impedance or large differences in impedance between left and right arms and legs.
Therefore, it is recommended to wipe hands and feet with a wet tissue before easurement if they are dry or have calluses or corns.

Q4. What are the ways to confirm that the measurement is correct?

1) As the measurement frequency increases, the impedance value should decrease.

2) Check if there is excessively large difference in impedance values between left and right arms and legs.
However, even if measured correctly, significant differences may occur due to clinical reasons.

3) Check that the impedance for each segment is not excessively high or low.
If impedance is excessively high, it will analyze a higher body fat.
If impedance is excessively low, it will analyze lower body fat.

Q5. What is the reason for measurement values changing with different heights entered?

Body composition analyzers that use the BIA method consider the length (height) of the conductor as a crucial variable in the body composition analysis algorithm. Therefore, entering different heights will result in different measurement values.

Q6. Why does the desirable weight change even with the same height?

The desirable weight is calculated considering the examiner's muscle mass, so the desirable weight may change depending on changes in muscle mass.

Q7. Why is body weight not accurately measured?

1) Ensure that i Series is stably installed on a hard, flat surface.

2) Use a spirit level to ensure that i Series is horizontal. You can adjust the height of the foot part to level it.

3) Errors occur in the measurement if you hold or move the hand electrodes during body weight measurement.

4) Calibration of the body weight scale can be performed by knowing the exact weight.
If calibration of the body weight scale is required, please contact the distributor.

Q8. What is the reason for decreased body weight but not decreased body fat?

Generally, during the initial stage of dieting, carbohydrates are primarily broken down for energy, and relatively more body water is lost than body fat. To reduce body fat, fat-burning exercises and dietary control are necessary.

Q9. Why does body fat percentage increase even though body weight has decreased?

Body fat percentage is the ratio of body fat mass to body weight.
(Body fat percentage = Body fat/Weight)
Thus, even if body weight decreases and body fat mass does not decrease or decreases minimally, the body fat percentage increases.

Q10. What is the reason for waist circumference and abdominal fat ratio measured differently from those measured with a tape measure?

The body circumference value of i Series is estimated using impedance.
Therefore, although there may be differences from measurements with a tape measure, it allows for quick and easy measurement and management of changes.

Q11. Why are body composition measurements different according to gender (empirical variables)?

Body composition analyzers using the BIA method measure impedance, and body composition values are calculated by applying impedance to the body composition analysis algorithm.
The body composition analysis algorithm is created using statistical techniques, and the more variables related to body composition are used, the higher the accuracy.
Therefore, i Series applies empirical variables such as age, gender, height, and weight with high correlations with body composition to increase measurement accuracy, resulting in different body composition values when gender changes.
This is similar to increasing reliability and reducing errors by differentiating variables such as gender, age, and region in statistics and surveys.

Q12. What is the reason for the difference in measurement values compared to other equipment?

i Series measures impedance, and the algorithms used to analyze body composition from the measured impedance vary by manufacturer.
The body composition analysis algorithm using impedance is generally developed based on DEXA, which is considered the gold standard for body composition analysis.
Although the body composition analysis algorithm using impedance has a very high correlation with DEXA, it has a standard error of estimate, so the measurement results of a specific subject using a specific body composition analyzer may differ from DEXA.

Q13. What is the reason for the difference in measurement values compared to other equipment and the MEDIANA score?

Body composition scores are calculated using unique algorithms for each manufacturer.
Unlike other equipment that calculate scores based only on muscle and body fat, i Series reflects comprehensive results including BMI, waist circumference, abdominal fat ratio, and visceral fat analysis, in addition to muscle and body fat. Therefore, the scores may differ from those of other equipment.
